Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has finally called the start of El Nino, even though the US’s NOAA claimed it started a few months ago. The BOM’s announcement, combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, means in the coming months, the effects will start to be felt, and heat extremes are expected.
Right now, in September, when the effects of El Nino are not present, the state of New South Wales, Australia, is experiencing temperatures 10-15C above average. If these highs continue so far above average over the summer months, we could see heat extremes humanity has never experienced before. After Australia, from February, the hot season will start in the Global South, where millions of people will be exposed to unliveable temperatures in structures ill-suited to heat extremes. It is time for all of us to get ready, as best we can.
